How We Digitize Your Film Reels

Cleaning & Repairing
Our expert technicians carefully examine, clean, and repair your film footage to prepare it for digitization. Every effort is made to remove surface dust and debris to ensure an accurate and clear conversion. If your footage is on 50-ft reels, we'll splice them onto larger, 400-foot reels. Any damaged areas of your film will be repaired if possible, and large sections of blank footage will be removed. Our approach is professional and thorough, ensuring the best possible outcome for your precious memories.
Transfer & Monitoring
Our broadcast-grade archival system ensures that your film is digitized with the utmost care, frame-by-frame, directly from the emulsion surface. Our technicians monitor the entire process, making necessary adjustments for color balance and contrast to ensure a top-quality transfer. We firmly believe that nothing beats the trained human eye in this process. Our attention to detail ensures that you will receive a product that meets your expectations.

Convenient & Secure Storage
We provide an archival-grade DVD that is capable of lasting for 100+ years with every film transfer order. These DVDs can be played in virtually all standard DVD players and blu-ray players. If you wish to share your memories with your loved ones, we can provide you with extra copies.
To ensure that your memories are future-proofed, you can opt for a USB flash drive along with your film to DVD order (available for free on orders over 1,500 ft). This flash drive will contain MP4 digital files that can be stored and viewed on modern digital devices like phones, tablets, and computers. Flash drives are a safe and convenient way to view and share your newly digitized memories with friends and family. Furthermore, these files can be edited directly from your computer.
IMPORTANT! It is strongly advised to promptly back up your digital files either onto your computer or a cloud-based service (Dropbox, Google Photos, iCloud, etc.) of your preference once you have received your order in full. As time passes, flash drives may potentially become damaged or corrupted, rendering the stored data unreadable. In the event that additional copies are required, we retain all digital files on our system for up to 30 days following the completion of your order.
How To Determine Film Reel Sizes

50-foot reel
A 50-foot reel will fit in the palm of your hand and is about 3 inches wide.
Running time: about 3 minutes
200-foot reel
A 200-foot reel is about 5 inches wide, the size of a CD or DVD.
Running time: about 13 minutes
400-foot reel
Remember 45-rpm records? A 400-foot reel is about the same size.
Running time: about 25 minutes
Your boxes may be labeled, "Double 8, 25 feet." Old 8mm movie cameras used a 25-foot roll of 16mm film. When this film was processed in Kodak's lab, it was slit down the center, becoming two 25-foot film strips, 8 millimeters wide. These strips were then spliced together. The result: 50 feet of film. Old movie reels often have a footage scale. If your reel isn't full, the scale can help to estimate how much film is on the reel.

"No company I have dealt with has kept me better informed every step of the way including letting me know my valuable movies arrived, that I was in queue for service, the status of the service, that my movies had been converted, that they were in the mail and when they were expected to arrive. And the conversion to digital of these 50-year-old movies was as good as it could be. Very well done. Highly recommend Nostalgic Media!"

Why You Should Convert Film Reels to Digital
Film reels degrade over time
Deterioration of old film reels is a common issue that most people face. Unless you transfer your old films to a digital format, they will inevitably become damaged over time. Attempting to view them on a working film projector may seem like a good idea, but it could actually cause more harm than good. The risk of damage and deterioration increases with age, making it important to seek professional help to preserve your precious memories. By transferring your old film reels to digital format, you can ensure that they are preserved for future generations to enjoy without the risk of further damage or deterioration.

Preserve memories for future generations
Digitizing film reels is a simple and cost-effective way to ensure that your memories are preserved for generations to come. It is also environmentally friendly, as it eliminates the need for physical storage space and reduces the amount of waste generated by traditional film storage methods. If you have a collection of film reels that you want to preserve, consider digitizing them today.
Digitizing film reels is not just about preserving memories; it's also about making them accessible to future generations. Digital files can be easily shared and accessed, making it possible for family members and friends to relive memories and stories that might have otherwise been lost. It's also an excellent way to ensure that your family history and legacy are passed down to future generations.
Conveniently enjoy on your modern devices
In today's digital age, it's essential to keep up with the latest technology trends. One such trend is to digitize your film reels for easy access and sharing. With the help of professional services that specialize in converting film to digital, you can say goodbye to the hassle of handling boxes of old aging film reels.
Digitizing your old family movie films makes it convenient to transfer them onto your computer or phone, and store them in a secure cloud-based system or an external hard drive. This way, you can access your memories from anywhere, anytime and share them with anyone in just a few clicks.

Frequently Asked Questions
Don't see your question answered?
Call us: (404) 844-3840
Yes. All reels will be returned with your completed film transfer order. Small 50ft reels will be returned empty, having been spliced onto our larger, archival 400ft reels.
We are able to transfer your reels in the order you specify but with one important guideline to follow: We cannot mix different film types. For example, we are unable to convert Super 8 reels in the middle of Regular 8 reels, and vice versa. If you have numbered your reels in a way that different film types are mixed in together, we cannot guarantee that the individual order of reels will be kept.
All film orders are standard definition transfers.
Average turnaround time is 7 business days in-house. Please allow longer processing times during the holidays.
