About 8mm Film

8mm (standard) film emerged in the 1930s as a cost-effective substitute for 16mm. Often called “Double 8” or “Regular 8”, these film reels used 16mm film that contained double the number of perforations (sprockets) compared to regular 16mm film.

During filming, the initial run through the camera would only expose half the film's width. The reel would then need to be turned over and reinserted into the camera to expose the remaining half. After processing, the film is cut lengthwise down the center, yielding two pieces of 8mm film.

Each frame was a quarter size of 16mm, allowing four times more footage on the same film amount, making it affordable for amateur filmmakers. Each 50-foot spool provided about three minutes of filming time. We transfer your 8mm film to DVD or 8mm film to digital in real time, adjusting for color and contrast while capturing the entire frame.

About Super 8 Film

Super 8 film was introduced in 1965 as an improved version of standard 8mm film. This revolutionary format featured larger frame sizes and pre-scored film that eliminated the need for splitting, making it significantly more user-friendly than its predecessor.

The film came in easy-to-load cartridges that simplified the entire filming process. Unlike earlier formats, Super 8 didn't require flipping or reinserting the film mid-recording. The cartridge system protected the film from light exposure and handling damage, ensuring better results for amateur cinematographers.

Each frame was 50% larger than standard 8mm, delivering superior image quality while maintaining economical film usage. A standard 50-foot cartridge provided approximately three and a half minutes of recording time.

About 16mm Film

Eastman Kodak rolled out 16mm film in the 1920s, initially targeting home movie buffs and amateur filmmakers. But before you knew it, this format caught on with experts in education, businesses, government, and healthcare. TV networks and news crews went for 16mm film because it was cheaper and simpler to work with than 35mm film at the time.

Surprisingly, 16mm film continues to find applications in present-day television and cinematic productions, largely due to enhanced image quality and advances in digital technologies. Even so, converting 16mm film to digital makes viewing and sharing those memories much easier.

I never thought this service would be so great!!

We had almost 1000 old slides from my grandparents and parents - these were from the 1950s and 1960s. We never thought this would have turned out so well! The digital images were absolutely amazing! Nostalgic Media was incredibly professional, fair priced and did a fast amazing job! Their communication was perfect! The drive with all the pictures arrived fast and was so easy to use to sit and enjoy all our new pictures! I truly recommend Nostalgic Media if you have any media that needs to be made digital. I would trust them again for any media digitizing we need! Thanks to your staff!

Was pleased with the results. Pretty much what I expected. Only negative comment is that with the additional shipping costs the transfer became rather expensive for just 15 slides.

I sent 2 8 inch reels and 9 50ft reels and was VERY happy to see the videos after our projector had broken years ago. My deceased parents and our children’s childhood escapades came back to life!! Thank you!
