How To Determine Film Reel Sizes

50-foot Reel
A 50-foot reel will fit in the palm of your hand and is about 3 inches wide.
Running time: about 3 minutes
200-foot Reel
A 200-foot reel is about the size of a CD or DVD.
Running time: about 13 minutes
400-foot Reel
Remember 45-rpm records? A 400-foot reel is about the same size.
Running time: about 26 minutes
Important! Your boxes may be labeled, "Double 8, 25 feet." Old 8mm movie cameras used a 25-foot roll of 16mm film. When this film was processed in Kodak's lab, it was slit down the center, becoming two 25-foot film strips, 8 millimeters wide. These strips were then spliced together. The result: 50 feet of film.
Old movie reels often have a footage scale. If your reel isn't full, the scale can help to estimate how much film is on the reel.

Cleaning, Splicing & Repairing
Our 16mm film to DVD process begins with one of our trained technicians taking the time to thoroughly inspect, clean and make necessary repairs to your film footage before it is digitized. Your film is cleaned of surface dust and debris to ensure a clear and accurate conversion. Any 50-ft reels will be spliced together onto larger, archival 400-ft reels. Damaged sections of film will be repaired if possible, and large sections of blank footage will be removed.
Film Monitored
We transfer your 16mm film to DVD using a broadcast-grade archival system. Frame-by-frame, we capture your films directly from the emulsion surface. We believe there is no substitute for a trained human eye, which is why a skilled technician monitors your film throughout the entire process, making adjustments for color balance and contrast. Because of this, you’ll get a high quality transfer of your film reels to DVD and optional digital computer file.
Archival Grade DVD
Each 16mm film transfer receives an archival-grade DVD rated to last for 100+ years. These DVDs can be played in virtually all standard DVD players, along with certain blu-ray players. We can easily make your extra DVD copies if you want to share with friends and family.
Safe & Secure Storage
Want to future proof your memories? Ordering a USB flash drive with your film to DVD order will allow you to do exactly that (free for orders over 1,500 ft). This flash drive will contain an MP4 digital file, which will allow you to store and view your movies on all of your modern digital devices, such as computers, phones and tablets. Having this digital file on a flash drive provides you with a safe and convenient way to view and share your newly digitized memories with friends and family. You can even edit these files directly from your computer!

An Important Note About MP4 Files & USB Flash Drives

We highly recommend backing up your MP4 files directly to your computer or to a cloud service of your choice upon receiving your completed order. Over time, flash drives can become corrupt for any number of reasons, making it impossible to read the data that is stored on them. We keep all digital files on our system for up to 30 days after your order has been completed if extra copies are needed.

What Our Customers Say

"I sent some very old film to Nostalgic Media and they returned the most wonderful memories! Some of the film was over 80 years old. I had no idea if it was viable but it was and I’m quite happy with the results. I highly recommend this company!"

Why Use A Professional 16mm Film Transfer Service?

Unless you still have a working film projector, you will have no way of transferring, let alone viewing your old 16mm film reels. Even if you do still have a working film projector, it is not a good idea to try and view your aging reels on it. The chances of your projector damaging or destroying your reels become greater as your film reels age and decay.

Let Nostalgic Media bring your family vacations, birthdays, and weddings back to life. Enjoy peace of mind knowing that if something were to happen to your physical film reels, you will have digital copies that will stand the test of time. Enjoy the convenience of reliving your family treasures on all of your modern digital devices.

Since 1989, we have helped countless families bring their family memories into the digital age. Each order is handled with care and given personal attention right here in our lab in Atlanta, GA. Your media is kept safe every step of the way. With over 30 years of professional experience in video production and photography, we have the skills and expertise needed to turn your aging film reels into forever digital keepsakes.

View Movie Film Guide

Are my film reels returned?

Yes. All reels will be returned with your completed film transfer order. Small 50ft reels will be returned empty, having been spliced onto our larger, archival 400ft reels.

Can my reels be transferred in order?

We are able to transfer your reels in the order you specify but with one important guideline to follow: We cannot mix different film types. For example, we are unable to convert Super 8 reels in the middle of Regular 8 reels, and vice versa. If you have numbered your reels in a way that different film types are mixed in together, we cannot guarantee that the individual order of reels will be kept.

What is the final resolution of my film transfer?

All film orders are standard definition transfers.
